Wizard Warlock/Seti… a.k.a. Anarkist kryst is a funny dude. He loves joking, & especially sarcastic jokes. lol Check him out on Face book (f@ck yo couch). Being a very intelligent individual he’s very clever with his jokes & his lyrics. I was fortunate to record music with him. We recorded… Nuclear Winter/ Absolute Zero/ Museum Of Natural Wizardry & I featured on several of his songs. Like I said, he is a great writer. He knows how to stick to a subject, & break down every aspect of it. If I had to describe his style compared to movie titles it would be… Collateral damage/ Enemy of state/ The Matrix/ Conspiracy Theory/ & of course…. Star Wars.
We had a lot of good times together, & I’m glad he’s one of few that I consider a WIZARD!!!
In 1993 I met an MC by the name of “Night Breed”. It was a hot summer night on 8Th street, right off of 6Th avenue. My self & my partner Shunga were having a cipher (rapping) with 2 guys we just met, Nut & Flake. Minutes later a couple of other guys walk up the cipher & ask “can I get in this?”. We were like, “yeah go ahead”. So this guy enters the cipher with a voice I NEVER heard in life!!! I looked at my partner, & we both had frowns on our face. Not because this guy was wack, but because we knew from that moment he was 1 of us!!! This guys voice sounded like a super villain. It threw all of us off, yet at the same time it fueled the fire we were sparking. We went a couple of rounds & then exchanged numbers. After he left, my partner & I spoke of him. My partner said, yo that dude was a wizard. I replied, yeah… a wizard warlock!!! From that day on we both called him Wizard Warlock.
Years later… this guy wasn’t only a (rap) team member, but a good friend as well. He lived in New Rochelle, & I lived in the Bronx. I used to meet him on Fordham Road, & we would hang out. I soon found out that this was the BEST free style artist I ever met!!! This dude could flow about any & everything right there on the spot. He had a College graduates vocabulary, yet still spoke with street slang. I thought this dude was INCREDIBLE!!! I witnessed this dude DESTROY people in rap battles. Despite how he felt about my skills, I would be willing to battle anyone as long as I had Wizard Warlock with me!!!
As our friendship grew we hung out at each others house. He introduced me to his son Charles, who was about 4-5 years old, I believe. This kid had something with him that I spotted immediately. We were playing with his toys, & instead of play fighting with the toys… he wanted us to work together as a team. Most kids want to fight… like, “my man SHOT your man, boom!” Yet Charles was like, “my man is going to HELP YOU climb the wall. This was a sign of team work & love to me.
Years later… our friendship was tight. We battled dudes in the street together & performed together on stage. I remember we had a show, & he came dressed like Morpheus from “The Matrix”. Not only was he dressed like him, but he also had the knowledge of Morpheus too.
To be continued………
I started MCing (rapping) in 1988. In 1989-1990 I was 1/4 of a group named (D.T.B.) Darker The Berry. It was myself, Kev Lover, Jadest, & Nice. My rapping skills were OK, I guess for the time. Looking back, I think my style was pretty simplistic. Which was OK because I was fairly a new MC.
By 1991-1992 I was in a different group called (T.C.E.) The Children’s Existence. It was myself, Quik Karl, Ra-lee, Baby Blunt (RIP), Sha Binz, & Mama Crystal. We were strongly influenced by (Tribe called quest). My MC skills were slightly improving, & I became a better free-style artist as well.
In 1993 I reunited with a friend from my first high school, & we formed a group called (NIW) Nine Ill Wizards. It was myself, & Shunga. At this point my MC skills had grown to a different level. Free-styling was simple, & my writing became more intricate. I was surrounded with top notch MC’s such as, Matrix, Mad Man & his partner Nut, Wizard Warlock/Night Breed, & Black Buzzard. These dudes kept me on my toes, (as far as MCing).
In 1996-1997 my partner Shunga got incarcerated. Which affected my MC skills, because he was my #1 influence at the time. I then formed another chapter of NIW, which was sort of like a compilation of MCees. It was myself, Nis & G7 (Genesix), Omni & Hush (Entity Epo), K.Strong & Prodigal (Paragraphics), Wizard Warlock & our producer Stress (Dr. Lithium). By this time my MC skills were crazy!!! My content improved & my imagination was unheard of.
In 1997 I also linked up with a group called (Maniacal Madness) which was sort of a MC merger. Maniacal consisted of Jug, Outcome, Morbius, Godhead, & Cubee (The Traveler). I literally broke night rhyming with these guys on their roof top. By then I was totally comfortable with MCing & my skills were very sharp.
In 1999 I was part of a compilation album called Centri Circular Sonic. This consisted of different MCees from different groups. In no particular order…Myself, Logan P. McCoy, Jr. Wonder, Flat Line, Divine, Tyrone, Omni, Universal, & Boney Man.
In 2001-2002, we formed a group named (3′rd Message). It was myself, Logan P. McCoy, & Jr. Wonder. My MC skills slowly began to change into a different form. My aggression slowly stared to tone down a bit, & my concepts were a little more down to earth…so to speak!!!
In 2004 Myself & Lucky Logan formed a group called (Lucky & Sdaerd). We were the last 2 to survive out of the 9 or 10 people prior to this. At the time I thought I was at my peak of MCing, & I had no idea how much better I would get in the future!!!
(Today) 2012… I’m almost embarrassed of my old material, but I understand that it was all a growth process. I can say today I am a well rounded MC, & I plan to improve even more.
Question: What’s up Sdaerd? How are you doing today?
Answer: I’m good, glad to be alive. lol
Question: I hear that… lol I came across some of your old music from the 1990′s, & I was amazed! Who was the other guy you were rapping with?
Answer: Well it depends on what song you heard.
Question: I just remember the hook, saying “The Dreaded up…The O & evil” ?
Answer: WOW!!! That was myself & my partner Shunga. The hook actually said “The Dreaded up…The O.N.Evil.
Question: What year was that recorded?
Answer: It was 1993 or 1994.
Question: You guys sounded great together! I noticed you were a bit more animated, or should I say aggressive back then.
Answer: lol…Yeah, that was an interesting time in my life. I had a lot of personal things going on. I was holding in a lot of anger.
Question: O.K. that makes sense. Would you like to share some of those things with us?
Answer: lol…Like I said, there were PERSONAL things!!! I’d rather not discuss it.
Question: Understandable. So if you compared your old style to your present style, what do you think would make them different?
Answer: Well a lot of my old stuff from the early 90′s was sort of improvised. What I mean is…if I heard a beat I liked I would jump on it, even if the flow or delivery didn’t really fit the beat. Back then it was a rush job, & it didn’t take to much thought. Everything was off instinct instead of planning. I was still learning how to be an MC, & I had no idea of the level it could get to. Back then I wasn’t conscious of breath control, pronunciation, patterns, & many other things that I know of today. I was angry, & I approached every song with that same anger or aggression.
These days I’m much more happier! lol…I try my best to make my lyrics fit the beat that I’m rapping to. Now my topics & concepts are much more flexible. I talk more about what’s going on in my life, compared to what’s going on in my head. These days I’m even singing on hooks (Choruses). Years ago that wouldn’t have even been a thought. I think I’ve matured & it shows in my music. Someone might say, “I liked the old Sdaerd better”. I understand what they mean, but I disagree!!! The old Sdaerd had a lot of energy & maybe a wilder imagination. The new Sdaerd is definitely a better word smith, & his concepts are much more broader. I’m trying to combine their styles together, lol…Then we’ll have a whole different interview on just that!!! lol
Question: lol I personally like both Sdaerds! They both bring something different to the table. Thanks for sharing that with us, I know your a busy man & you have other things to do so we’ll continue another time?
Answer: Thank you, it’s a pleasure.
Question: so will the new new Sdaerd be here for the next interview? lol
Answer: When I see him I’ll ask him. lol
Question: Once again, thank you sir.
Answer: Any time.
(Hand shake).
Question: So SD@ERD, it’s been a while since the last time we spoke. How have you been, & what have you been up to?
Answer: Yeah, it’s been a minute. I’m doing great!!! I’ve been practicing, or better yet mastering my skills.
Question: OK… so I expect your a little better than you were the last time we spoke? lol…
Answer: lol…Actually yeah. I’ve noticed my improvement, & I’ve been told by others that I’ve improved as well.
Question: So what does this practice or mastery of skills consist of?
Answer: Well I can’t tell you exactly what I do, but I can share a few things with you. lol… I mean certain things are a little personal, you know?
These days when I rehearse my lyrics I focus on understanding the message I’m trying to get across, more than just memorizing the lyrics. I also practice the lyrics in different accents & tones. This makes my style more diverse & flexible. There are more things I do as well, but unfortunately I can’t share them with you just yet. lol…
Question: lol… You seem to take your music very serious, & I can respect that. Maybe after the interview you can share your secret practice with me? lol…
Question: What do you think of Hip Hop in it’s present day? Do you like it…or dis like it?
Answer: For me, music is a relationship. With that said, the relationship I have with it might be different than the next person. It’s sort of like a woman that I’m seeing. I like the woman & I’m attracted to her, but I know she has better potential. You know what I mean? I’m from another era in Hip Hop… I know things change & you have to adapt to the new, but I’m not really impressed. I feel there’s so much MORE we can talk about besides money, drugs, clothes, & jewelry.
Question: So are you saying that your relationship with Hip Hop is more like a serious marriage, & others seem to be having a high school fling? lol…
Answer: lmao… exactly, well put. lol
Question: You did tell me before the interview that you only had 10 minutes, so we’ll continue this a little later OK?
Answer: Yes sir, thank you.
Question: Good seeing you again, & thank you for coming.
(Hand shake)
Here is a list (in no particular order) of MC’s who inspired SD@ERD0 TH@ WE1RD0.
(Part 4)
So there I sat listening to my music while all the other patients were sleeping. Afraid & confused, I needed some kind of comfort. Each song I listened to had some kind of inspirational message in it. At the time it seemed as if the songs were talking directly to me. For instance… “You gotta believe in your self”, “Proud to be alive”, “Help us find away”, & “Escape from hell”. These songs meant so much for me, & I had time to really absorb them. About 2 hours later, I was ready to get some rest. I woke up the next morning with a totally different attitude. I was optimistic, & I kept telling myself that I would get through this no matter what. (A week later)… As my health bettered I finally was able to return home under 1 condition, I had to give myself shots daily. I had just gotten used to taking shots in my stomach… but now I had to give myself the injection. This was a whole new category for me, but like any other obstacles in life I had to do it.
So now I’m home & I wanted to create some music, but for some reason I couldn’t!!! I thought to myself maybe today’s just not the day for that. So I tried again the next day, & the next day & the next… but it just wasn’t working. I discussed this with a close friend of mine & he said to me, “give it some time”. So I gave it some time. About 4-5 months later I finally was able to create. So if your wondering…”what happened to SD@ERD?”…Life happened!!! There will always be obstacles & difficulties in life. I believe this is what makes an individual stronger, smarter, & adaptable. So if your going through something personal, please try to be optimistic. I know it sounds easier said then done, but it helped me, & I’m sure it could help you too. I want to thank my wife & my good friends for being there when I needed them, it meant a lot for me. At first I wasn’t going to share this experience with you guys I thought it was too personal, but after thinking it over I decided… yeah, that’s the reason I should share it. Maybe this will help the next person who’s going through something, & talking about it helped me heal as well.
Now lets get back to creating!!!
(Part 3)
I enter my room, & all I hear is the sound of my neighbors life support machine. (beep, beep, beep) I slowly sit on my bed waiting impatiently for the results of my test. Later that day the doctor walks into my room with a serious look on his face. He asked me if i was a cigarette smoker, & I told him no. He then asked me if I’d been on any long trips recently, I replied… no why do you ask. He then told me that I had multiple blood clots in my lungs. I knew that a blood clot was pretty serious, so when he said multiple… I was really nervous. He explained that this usually occurs when your a heavy cigarette smoker, take long trips, or if your family has a history of blood clots. I didn’t fit into any of these categories, so the doctor & I were puzzled. He told me the pills & the shots that I’ve been taking should keep the clots from worsening. I asked him how long would I have to stay in the hospital & he said, probably a week 0r two. He said, “if you come up with any more questions you can ask me when I return”.
That night I had very bad back pains, so I asked the nurse for a shot to stop the pain. She proceeded to give me a morphine shot. No exaggeration … I felt the cool liquid traveling through my veins until the pain slowly faded away. That night it was hard for me to sleep, so I decided to take a stroll around the hospital. It was about 1:00 am & I was wide awake. The hospital floor I was on was shaped like a circle, so I started walking around doing my laps. I needed to work on my breathing so this was a good exercise for me. About an hour later I stepped back in my room, sat on my bed & started listening to my I pod. For some reason I decided to only listen to songs myself & my partner made. I was told that our music is very inspirational… but me being in a life or death situation… I finally heard what others had heard for years.
